A Glimpse into the Future of Fort Cornwallis: Action footage & photos
Ask anyone in Penang and they will tell you that the restoration of Fort Cornwallis, a Heritage Site and Historical Icon in Georgetown Penang is long overdue. We take a look at a short history, the moat reinstatement project, its progress so far and what to expect.
Discover the History and Future of Fort Cornwallis: Moat Reinstatement Project
History buffs and Penang enthusiasts! We’re excited to share some fantastic news about one of Penang’s most iconic landmarks, Fort Cornwallis. This historical gem, standing proud since the late 18th century, is undergoing a significant transformation with the Moat Reinstatement Project.
Fort Cornwallis is named after the Governor-General in Bengal in the late 1700s, Charles Cornwallis. It is one of the most interesting historical landmarks in Georgetown. It is located close to the Esplanade, next to the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower.
Its History
Fort Cornwallis, located at the northeastern coast of Penang, has long been a symbol of our rich heritage. Originally built by the British East India Company, this fort has witnessed countless historical events and has been a key part of Penang’s story. Its sturdy walls, charming cannons, and scenic views have always captivated visitors, but there’s more to this fort than meets the eye.
The Project
The Moat Reinstatement Project is a remarkable initiative aimed at restoring the fort’s historic moat, which once played a crucial role in its defense. This project is not just about bringing back a piece of history; it’s about preserving our cultural legacy and enhancing the visitor experience. The moat, which had fallen into disrepair over the years and in most places filled in beyond recognition is being meticulously restored to its former glory, thanks to the dedication and expertise of our restoration teams.
While the original moat encircles the structure, only the South and West moats will be reinstated. Roads are now built on the East and North side making reinstatement impossible.
Its Progress So Far
Penangnites will tell you that it has taken years since the project was launched in March 2023. However the end is in sight for the South Moat at least. This is the part facing the Immigration Office and Penang State Legislative Assembly on Light Street. Progress on the South Moat (Phase 6) has been incredible, as it will be revealed to the public on the 7 July 2024, a year ahead of schedule.
The restoration team has worked tirelessly to excavate and reconstruct the moat, ensuring every detail aligns with historical accuracy. From reinforcing the fort’s structure to landscaping around the moat, every aspect is being handled with utmost care. The project aims to create an immersive historical experience, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate the fort’s strategic importance.
What to Expect
The completion of South Moat also sees the facelift of our beloved historical icon. White plaster and paint has been applied to the Fort walls. This gives it a glimmering gold finish in the sunlight. The moat will not only serve as a historical feature but also as a beautiful, serene waterway complete with fountains, adding to the fort’s picturesque charm. Imagine walking around Fort Cornwallis, with the gentle sounds of water surrounding you, as you soak in the stories of the past. It’s a blend of history and nature that will make your visit truly unforgettable.
A Quick Glimpse
We took a sneak peak into the project and its final preparations for the weekend opening. We’re thrilled to share with you the project here and we can’t wait to welcome further phases especially the West Moat Reinstatement (Phase 7). Work is currently also being carried out to turn the Store Room (Phase 5) into a gallery museum. This is scheduled to be completed in August 2024.
