Nestled high on Penang Hill at Lower Tunnel Road, Hickory Bungalow stands as a serene retreat and a testament to Malaysia’s rich colonial past. Originally named “Dolce Domum,” this heritage bungalow is more than a century old, offering guests an exquisite blend of history, nature, and architectural beauty. Today, it’s a beloved guesthouse with much to offer in terms of cultural heritage and breathtaking views.
Dolce Domum
Hickory Bungalow, originally named “Dolce Domum,” is a century-old heritage building situated on the eastern slope of Penang Hill at an elevation of 650 meters (2,100 feet).
Built in the early 1900s, Hickory was first commissioned by a Chinese tin tycoon from Larut, Perak. Reflecting the wealth and status of its original owner, the bungalow showcases a colonial architectural style typical of the British influence on Malaysia.
Eventually, the bungalow passed into the hands of another prominent Penang-based Chinese tycoon, who preserved its character for decades. However, after the passing of this owner, the bungalow was left uninhabited for a significant period, losing some of its original glory to time and nature.
A New Lease of Life
Following a period of near abandonment after the owner’s passing, the bungalow was purchased and restored by Raj, a dedicated preservationist. The current owner had acquired the property with the vision of restoring it to its former charm.
Painstakingly restored while maintaining the authenticity of its original architectural style, Hickory now operates as a 15-room guesthouse that combines modern conveniences with historical charm.
