A national independence day celebration, the Merdeka Parade (or Independence parade) is celebrated on a grand scale throughout the country.

Malaysia received its independence from its colonial master on the 31st of August 1957.

At the state level, a local parade is held at Esplanade where over 150 contingents from various government agencies, state Municipal Council, armed forces will be marching in the parade.

If you are not one for crowds, you can still join in the celebration in the comfort of your home or hotel as parades would be broadcast live.

However, nothing beats being at the Esplanade for the parade. If you are in Penang around August, remember to pencil this in your calendar.
